Acually in Windows based PC, there a lot of software out there that you could use to optimize your machine such as Raxco Perfect Disk, Ultimate Defrag and many more. For Mac, I recommended Onyx, a free software which you could use.
OnyX is a multifunction utility for Mac OS X. It allows you to verify the Startup Disk and the structure of its System files, to run miscellaneous tasks of system maintenance, to configure the hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock and of some of Apple's own applications, to delete caches, to remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome and more.
Actually, my MacBook Pro having a slow startup and some font errors whereby my XAMPP controller was having some "alienize" font. So, I decided to search for a solution on how to overcome this problem. Then I found a forum about Mac user and one of the guy suggested Onyx to cleanup my font.
The software is just around 15mb, and very user friendly with all alerts and popup. It also managed to make my MacBook startup faster, you can feel the difference after you cleanup all those cache files.
